In her most recent music video for her song “Try,” Caillat uses her platform to broadcast a message of positivity for women who feel pressured by society’s unrealistic beauty standards. In the verses of the song, she makes statements similar to the messages that society sends to women, such as “Run the extra mile, keep it slim so they like you,” while showing women, herself among them, with their hair impeccably done and their faces covered in a great deal of makeup. As the video and song progress, all of its actresses gradually return to their natural states and the lyrics change to a more encouraging tone, including the titular line of the song “You don’t have to try so hard, you don’t have to give it all away […] you don’t have to change a single thing.” The music industry, and the entertainment industry in general, could use a lot more positive messages like the one Colbie Caillat has provided here.
